ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan volleyball head coach Erin Virtue announced Wednesday (March 29) the hiring of Matt Adams as the team’s performance analyst.
“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Matt to Ann Arbor,” said Virtue. “As we continue to build a wonderful staff here at Michigan Volleyball, it was important to hire someone that brings a strong background in performance analytics on board. Matt’s talents in this area are sure to bring a unique perspective to help Michigan Volleyball continue to push the boundaries of technology, analytics and innovation.”
Adams hails from Fairport, N.Y., and graduated from Syracuse University where he double-majored in sport analytics and economics also while carrying two minors in information management and technology and sport management. Through these areas of focus, Adams contributed to research projects involving volleyball, basketball, baseball, football, soccer, Australian football and golf. In addition, he also worked as an analytics intern with RSPCT Basketball Technologies from 2021–23.
His strong analytical background, vast knowledge of computer languages and visual analytics will significantly transcend across his role as performance analyst where he will be the primary analyst for performance and load management data for the Michigan volleyball program.
“As our sport continues to grow in the United States, this position continues to become more and more valuable,” Virtue said. “The margins for success are thin, and Matt will help our staff to see and understand the gaps in both performance and training methodologies.”
During his time at Syracuse, Adams served as a practice player for the women’s volleyball team and competed on the men’s club volleyball team, holding the role as president during his last season. As a setter, Adams led the team to two ECVA DI North Championships for…
