Bruins’ Comeback Falls Short in 3-2 Loss at LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. – Senior Iman Ndiaye recorded a team-high 19 kills and Ashley Mullen connected for 43 assists in the UCLA women’s volleyball team’s 3-2 loss at LSU in the Maravich Center on Friday evening.
 
Set scores were 20-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-21 and 10-15.
 
After dropping the first two sets, the Bruins (0-1) stormed back in the third and fourth with a combined 28 kills at a .388 hitting percentage. Grayce Olson and Anna Dodson both reached double-figure kills with 11 and 10, respectively. Junior Peyton Dueck snuffed out 18 digs in her first start as UCLA’s libero.
 
LSU outside hitter Jurnee Robinson recorded a match-high 23 kills while middle blocker Anita Anwusi tacked on 13 more at a .667 hitting percentage.
 
It was setter Ashley Mullen, who made her collegiate debut, that helped spark a 6-1 run in set three with an ace at the service line and two assists on kills by Ndiaye. The Tigers (1-0) went on to even the frame, 21-all, but Olson’s fourth ace of the match – and her career – put set point at the line for the Bruins who extended into the fourth frame on a bad set by LSU.
 
Three consecutive Bruin blocks in the fourth pushed UCLA out to a seven-point advantage, 15-8. Two roofs came courtesy of Desiree Becker and Ndiaye. Becker, the graduate transfer from Northwestern, came alive in the final three sets with six kills and four blocks.
