Cortland junior middle blocker Alexa Guedez (Mamaroneck/Rye Neck) and junior libero Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) have been selected as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Volleyball Offensive and Defensive Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week ending Nov. 5.
Guedez averaged three kills per set (33 in 11 sets) and posted a .385 attack percentage in three Cortland non-league wins to close out the regular season. She had 13 kills with two errors in 28 attempts (.393) in a four-set win at St. Lawrence on Friday. On Saturday, she finished with 13 kills and a .435 attack percentage along with nine blocks, five solo, in a four-set win over Clarkson, followed by seven kills and six blocks in a sweep of Nazareth.
Martens averaged 5.6 digs per set (62 in 11 sets) during the 3-0 weekend. She had 20 digs at St. Lawrence on Friday, and the following day posted 27 digs and two aces versus over Clarkson and 15 digs against Nazareth.
For the season, Guedez has registered 197 kills (2.0 per set) and team bests of a .368 attack percentage and 97 blocks (1.0 per set) in 97 sets over 26 matches. Martens has 427 digs (5.0 per set) and 34 aces in 85 sets over 23 matches.
Cortland (23-3) is the top seed for this week’s SUNYAC tournament. The Red Dragons will host the league semifinals and finals Friday and Saturday. Cortland begins play Friday at 4 p.m. versus an opponent to be determined.
