Defending world champions Iran and Brazil had mixed fortunes on Day 3 of the 2023 World ParaVolley Sitting Volleyball World Cup in Cairo.
The Iranian men’s team played their first World Cup match on Monday, beating fellow Asian team Japan 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-21), while the Brazilian women’s team fell in four sets to Canada 3-1 (15-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20).
Brazil dopped their record to 1-1, while Canada opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 card.
In other men’s matches, China claimed their second win in the tournament with a 3-1 (18-25, 25-17, 25-10, 25-14) victory over Pan American champions Brazil in Group C.
Two Group D matches were played, highlighted by triumphs of France and Germany against Great Britain 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-14) and Ukraine 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-22).
Meanwhile, China and Slovenia showed their experience against their rivals in the women’s tournament, recording straight-set triumphs.
China made a solid start, not giving any chance to hosts Egypt to get any closer and winning 3-0 (25-9, 25-4, 25-3) in Group E, while Slovenia outplayed the Netherlands 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-13) in Group F.
Germany and China are tied in Group E with 2-0 cards, as the European defeated Mongolia 25-15, 25-15, 25.
In the all-African clash in Group F between Egypt and Rwanda, the latter prevailed 3-0 (25-6, 25-16, 25-10).
The World Cup is a Paris 2024 Paralympic qualifier, where one berth per gender is available for the winner or the highest placed non-qualified team of the tournament.
Ten teams have qualified so far for the Paris 2024 Paralympics, including France (M and W) as hosts, world champions Iran (M) and Brazil (W), Asian champions Kazakhstan (M) and China (W), European champions Bosnia and Herzegovina (M) and Italy (W), and Pan American champions Brazil (M) and United States (W).
