GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Alabama volleyball opened Southeastern Conference play Wednesday night on the road against 12th-ranked Florida, falling in a hard-fought three set battle by set scores of 19-25, 19-25 and 17-25.
Alabama (6-6, 0-0 SEC) trailed Florida (8-2, 0-0 SEC) early in the first set but, just as the Gators were eyeing a double-digit lead, the Tide rattled off four in a row to make it a five-point deficit at 16-11. A 3-0 run soon after would draw Alabama within three as Florida took a timeout at 17-14. The Tide kept it close, but the Gators eventually held on to win, 25-19. Florida won set two by the same score, holding off a late 5-0 push by Alabama at set point, and then closed it out with a 25-17 win in the third.
Kendyl Reaugh led the team with 12 kills, her eighth match of the season with double-digit kills, and Alyiah Wells was close behind with 10 kills and a .474 hitting percentage. Brooke Slusser paced the offense with 23 assists and was just three digs shy of a double-double, one dig behind team leader Victoria Schmer with eight. Sydney Gholson led the team with three aces, her third match of the season with three or more.
