Alabama Volleyball Falls to Tennessee in Season Finale Friday in Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama volleyball fell to Tennessee in three sets Friday night in Tuscaloosa, concluding the 2022 season.

Alabama (10-20, 4-14 SEC) fell to Tennessee (17-13, 11-7 SEC) in the opening two sets, 21-25 and 18-25, and made a late push in the third to keep the match alive but the Lady Vols ultimately sealed the three-set decision with a narrow 26-24 win in the third.

After the match, the Crimson Tide honored its six seniors: Taylor Drapp, Emily Janek, Dru Kuck, Abby Marjama, Katie Shook and Alyiah Wells.

It was a tightly contested opening set, with neither team taking larger than a two-point lead until a 5-1 run gave Tennessee a late 21-18 lead, forcing an Alabama timeout. The Lady Vols would hold on to win the opening frame, 25-21. Tennessee got off to a hot start in the second, leading 9-3 before Alabama was forced to take an early timeout. The Lady Vols extended their lead to eight at the Tide’s next timeout, 17-9, and hit set point with a double-digit lead. Alabama stayed alive with four in a row before a kill put it away for Tennessee, 25-18, to take a 2-0 match lead.

The Lady Vols jumped ahead to a 10-4 lead in the third, but the Tide rallied with seven unanswered points to take a 11-10 lead. After eight tie scores, a Tennessee attack error put Alabama back ahead 19-18 and the visitors called a timeout. The Tide called its first timeout after the Lady Vols tied it up at 23-23 and quickly took its second with Tennessee at set point, 24-23. The score was back tied at 24-24 after a Lady Vol service error but Tennessee closed it out with back-to-back points to win, 26-24.
