Tehran, Iran, August 20, 2022 – Indomitable Iran stormed into the semi-finals of the 14th Asian Men’s U18 Volleyball Championship at the Federation Hall after brushing off the spirited Thailand 3-1 (24-26, 25-13, 25-19, 25-15) on Saturday.
The first set saw the determined efforts of Iranians to no avail as the Thai outfit came up in full strength. Iran put their acts together but still could not cope with the rivals’ tactics and went down to the opponents in a well-fought first set 24-26.
Iran, former seven-time winners, turned on the heat and became irresistible in the next three sets as they performed superbly to come up with major weapons they had – impenetrable defence, solid blocks and powerful attacks, to win them all 25-13, 25-19, 25-15 and the 3-1 match.
Mohammad Reza Alejalil scored a match-high 24 points including 23 attacks for Iran, while Samphan Leklai led Thailand with 11 points.
Iran made a clean sweep in the pool plays after bagging full 9 points from three straight wins against Chinese Taipei, China and Kuwait and stretched their aura of invincibility after powering past Thailand in the Saturday’s quarterfinals.
The exceptional win against Thailand secured hosts Iran not only their semifinal berth in the 14th edition but also a spot in the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship. Iran will battle it out with India in the Sunday’s semifinals, while Thailand will face Chinese Taipei in classification round for 5th-8th places.
