As the world eagerly awaits the start of the Olympic Games Paris 2024, preparations are in full swing at the iconic beach volleyball stadium in Champ-de-Mars Park, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.
One crucial element is the sand to be used throughout the competition, in which 24 women’s and 24 men’s teams will battle it out for the coveted Olympic title from 27 July to 10 August.
The sand will be provided by Sibelco, a renowned, world-leading, provider that has also supplied sand for the Olympic Games Athens 2004 and London 2012.
For Paris 2024, the sand will be sourced from the MontGru site, located just 100km from the venue at the Eiffel Tower, marking the FIVB and Paris 2024’s commitment to sustainable operations.
The sand will be laid across the competition, warm-up, and training courts, totalling approximately 2000 tonnes. Each court will have a sand depth of 40cm, ensuring a consistent, safe and high-quality surface for athletes.
The sand has been selected using stringent criteria and standards from the FIVB. The chosen material is naturally weathered, rounded, and free of potentially harmful materials such as shells and coral. Additionally, the sand’s colour, with a striking brown-sugar tone, creates a picturesque beach oasis in the city centre and ensures athletes can play confidently on a non-glaring surface as they compete in the memorable venue.
Through a strong collaboration between the FIVB, the French Volleyball Federation and the Paris 2024 Organising Committee, the legacy of the sand will reach far beyond the Closing Ceremony. Following the conclusion of the Olympic Games in August, the sand will be repurposed, with several projects in Paris and the surrounding areas benefiting from new, permanent beach volleyball courts.
Stay tuned for what is set to be a spectacular event!
