BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama senior middle blocker Alyiah Wells was named the Southeastern Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after helping lead the Crimson Tide to its first conference win of the season last week.
Wells led the team with 14 kills in the three-set sweep over Missouri last Wednesday, the first SEC win of the season for Alabama and for first-year head coach Rashinda Reed. She only committed two errors on 24 swings, good for a .500 hitting percentage, and added four blocks on defense. The 14 kills are tied for her highest total in SEC play this season and marks the ninth time in the last 10 games she has finished with double-digit kills.
The weekly award is the first of Wells’ career and the first for any Alabama player since March 1, 2020 when Abby Marjama and Madelyn St. Germain took home that week’s offensive and defensive accolades, respectively. The Tide has won 21 Offensive Player of the Week awards since the category was introduced in 2004.
Wells and the Crimson Tide will be back in action Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. CT in Foster Auditorium, with the match airing live on ESPNU.
