Boise, Idaho- The Wildcats defeated Saint Mary’s and fell to Boise State in back-to-back matches at the Boise State Tri-Dual on Wednesday, April 10.
In their first match of the day, Arizona defeated Saint Mary’s in a dominant 5-0 sweep. In the next match against Boise State, the Sand Cats fought till the very end but ultimately fell in 2-3 loss to the Broncos on their home turf.
Arizona’s Abby Russell/Olivia McElroy tested Stanford’s pair at the No. 1 position, pushing the match to three sets before ultimately falling just short against the Cardinal. After a loss against UCLA in the afternoon, the pair went 1-3 at the tournament.
Pair Hope Shannon/Annie Kost, going 2-0 for the day, faced a close match against the Gaels early in the afternoon but emerged victorious in three sets at the No. 2 position. In their next match, the pair defeated Boise State in a tight two sets (21-19, 23-21).
At No. 3, Kylee Fitzsimmons/Grace Cook earned an early win against the Gaels but fell just short in a three-set nail-biter against the Broncos. The pair went 1-1 at the Tri-Dual, putting them at 9-6 on the season.
Arizona’s Jess Horwath/Kate Phillips were undefeated at No. 4 at the Tri-Dual. The pair earned a hard-fought victory against the Gaels in three sets, and later in the afternoon the freshmen defeated the Broncos in two.
In Saint Mary’s match, Arizona’s Miranda Erro/Ashlyn Zilliken came back from a 21-16 first set loss to win the next two sets 21-18, 15-7. Later in the day against the Broncos, the pair fell in three sets, going 1-1 at the tournament.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Wildcats will head to Stanford, California to compete in the Stanford Invitational on Friday, April 12. Arizona will face a rematch against Stanford and will play Pacific University for the first time in program history.
