Badgers defeat Boilermakers, 3-1 | Wisconsin Badgers


SAINT JOHN, Ind. — The Wisconsin volleyball team wrapped up the spring season with a 3-1 win against Purdue in front of a sold out crowd at Lake Central High School on Sunday. The Badgers started the match off slow, losing the first set 25-17, but quickly picked up their momentum, winning the next three sets by five-or-more points (25-15, 25-13, 25-20). UW went 2-1 this spring season.

As a team, UW hit .270 (50 kills -10 errors -126 attempts) while holding Purdue to just .085 (41-13-141). 

Four Badgers recorded nine-or-more kills behind Julia Orzol with 16 putaways. Liz Gregorski added 13 kills while Anna Smrek and Carter Booth both put away nine kills. Booth led all hitters at .444 (9-1-18).

Resting several players for the match, the Badgers switched to a 5-1 offensive with MJ Hammill setting the first two sets and Izzy Ashburn quarterbacking the team for the second two sets, putting up 16 assists. 

Wisconsin dominated behind the service line, out-serving the Boilermakers, 7-3. Booth led all players with three perfect serves, followed by Ashburn, Orzol, Hammill, and Gulce Guctekin with one apiece. 

Guctekin dominated in the backcourt, leading all players with 32 digs. She was followed by Sydney Reed with nine saves and Joslyn Boyer with eight. 

Purdue dominated in blocks, out-blocking the Badgers 16-6. Booth, Orzol, and Gregorski each had two blocks to contribute to the defense.

“It was the first time in a while we have run a 5-1 in a match, and I thought both setters did a really good job. I thought we got better as the match went on and I thought we served the ball really well and took some great out-of-system swings as well.”
