Cal Sweeps Arizona, Falls To Top-Ranked UCLA

SEATTLE – No. 6/7 California beach volleyball earned a split on the opening day of the Pac-12 North Tournament at Alki Beach, sweeping No. 18 Arizona 5-0 before being dealt a 4-1 loss to top-ranked UCLA on Friday.
 
The Golden Bears’ 4s pair of Jenna Colligan and Lara Boos swept both of their matches and have won 10 straight sets over the past week. Cal moved to 16-8 overall on the season.

The Golden Bears won every set in their clean sweep of Arizona (15-5), marking the seventh time they’ve done so this season. Sierra Caffo and Kendall Peters kicked off the morning with a 21-12, 21-19 victory on court two while Colligan and Boos outlasted the Wildcats’ Jess Horwath and Kate Phillips 24-22, 21-18 on court four to give Cal a commanding 2-0 advantage. Gia Fisher and Emma Donley sealed the match on court one, taking the first set 22-20 before putting it away with a 21-11 clincher.

UCLA 4, Cal 1
Cal fell short to the Bruins (20-4) for the second time this season, having also lost a 4-1 match on March 1 at Mapes Beach in Los Angeles. After dropping the first match in straight sets on court two, Cal earned an equalizer with Colligan and Boos winning the 4s 21-18, 21-13. Straight-set victories by UCLA on courts one and five, however, put the match out of reach for Cal.
 
With the Bruins’ victory clinched, Marilu Pally and Kendall Peters pushed their 3s match to three sets with a 21-16 win in the second set, but ultimately fell 13-21, 21-16, 15-17.
