TALLAHASSEE, FLA. — In yet another momentous outing, senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann propelled No. 10 Georgia Tech volleyball to a comeback, 3-2 triumph (14-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-10) over Florida State on Sunday in Tully Gymnasium. In the first five-set match of the season for the Yellow Jackets, the vaunted attacker willed the White and Gold to a reverse sweep after starting off in a two-set hole.
Bergmann racked up a plethora of honors once more as she tied a program-record 38 kills in the match, becoming the first Yellow Jacket ever with four matches of 30 or more kills while moving to seventh in Tech history in career kills with 1,630 to date.
On top of her career high and program-best marks on the day, the decorated Jacket surpassed 400 kills on the season, improving to 437 as she came into the day leading the ACC and owning one of the top marks in the country. In addition to her 10th match of 20 or more kills this season, Bergmann also picked up 11 digs, three aces and two blocks for her 10th double double this year.
A number of Yellow Jackets came through supporting Bergmann, notably sophomore outside hitter Bianca Bertolino, who tallied a match-high 20 digs to go with 14 kills for her third double double of the season. Junior setter Bella D’Amico orchestrated the offense as she led the match with 43 assists, and graduate middle blocker Breland Morrissette topped the squad with five blocks and pitched in six kills.
Recovering from the early deficit, Georgia Tech (18-5, 11-3 ACC) went on to edge Florida State (16-9, 8-6 ACC) across the board in the stat columns, leading the way in kills (66-61), hitting percentage (.265-.248), assists (59-58), digs (61-58) and blocks (10-8).
How it Happened
Florida State had all the momentum early in the first set, speeding out to a 7-1 lead. Georgia Tech would climb back with four straight points to cut the deficit to 7-5, but the Seminoles responded with a streak of six to extend the lead to 13-5. As the set continued to flow, Tech pulled back near once more with six points in seven chances, drawing within three to trail 15-12. Florida State put things out of reach from there, going on an eight-point run and capping the set soon after for a 25-14 win in set one.
