Birthday Girl Erykah Lovett Leads Lady Vols to Sweep of Texas A&M


BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Sophomore Erykah Lovett and the Tennessee volleyball team picked up its second SEC win of the season Sunday at Reed Arena, sweeping Texas A&M (26-24, 25-17, 26-24).
 
Tennessee (8-7, 2-1 SEC) continued its good run of form offensively as it hit .337 and put down 48 kills.
 
Lovett – who celebrated her birthday on Sunday – led the charge with a team-and-match-high 18 kills on 34 attempts. She hit .441 on the day and added 10 digs to finish with a double-double.
 
Right-side attacker Morgahn Fingall took 31 swings and put down 15 kills to hit .355 in the victory. The Fairfax, Virginia, native scored two aces and picked up six digs.
 
Keondreya Granberry tallied six kills from her middle blocker position, while on the defensive side setter Natalie Hayward and libero Ashllyn King earned nine digs. Hayward finished the match with 36 assists.
 
Redshirt senior Kylie Robinson made her first career start for UT and played well. She picked up a pair of assists and five digs, but was especially effective from the service line, scoring a team-high three aces.
 

Texas A&M (10-4, 2-1 SEC) hit .273 for the match and was led by outside hitter Caroline Meuth who finished her day with 14 kills.
 

The opening set was close throughout as both teams finished with 16 kills. UT and Texas A&M were tied 12 times and the lead changed hands on six occasions in the first. For the Lady Vols, Lovett and Fingall carried the load as they put away seven and five kills, respectively.
 
Down 24-23, Tennessee fought off set point and evened the set at 24-24 thanks to Fingall’s fifth kill. After a block assist for Klaudia Pawlik and Lovett gave UT set point, Robinson finished off the Aggies with an ace.
 
UT owned the second and never trailed as it jumped out to a 7-3 lead early. The Lady Vols maintained their comfortable lead throughout and received seven kills from Lovett and a pair of aces from Robinson as they cruised to a 25-17 second-set win.
 

In the third, UT held off a late Texas A&M rally to clinch the match with a 26-24 win in the final frame. Down 15-20, the Aggies worked their way back into the set – fighting off set point five times – to tie the score at 24-24.
 
Granberry stimmed the rally with a kill to give UT set-point once again before Fingall closed out the match with her seventh kill in the set.
