Bison chomp Gators in straight sets on Dig Pink night


WASHINGTON – It was a festive and spirited Wednesday evening in the Field House as the Gallaudet University women’s volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 victory over Notre Dame of Maryland University before a pink clad crowd of 256. 

Gallaudet (13-10) donned special pink uniforms to celebrate the annual American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Dig Pink night. Dig Pink is a fundraising initiative of the Side-Out Foundation, which is a support and advocacy organization dedicated to making a significant and identifiable difference in the lives of breast cancer patients and their families by supporting clinical trials, increasing patient support services and educating communities.

This was the fifth straight 3-0 win for Gallaudet and sixth overall this season. The first two sets were close before GU pulled away in the third set en route to the 25-17, 25-19, 25-11 victory.

Seniors Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) and Elina Rubinshteyn (Austin, Texas) led the Bison with 10 kills each while sophomore setter Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) passed out 34 assists. Sophomore defensive specialist Leila Sicoli (Austin, Texas) and junior libero Mia Upchurch (Austin, Texas) recorded 12 and 10 digs, respectively.

BISON TRACKS

  • GU served up 10 aces
  • Four different Bison had two aces; Giuntoli, Sicoli, Upchurch and freshman Emily Nover (District Heights, Md.)
  • The Bison posted a .345 team hitting percentage
  • Gallaudet made five blocks
  • Sophomore outside hitter Malia Zornoza (Riverside, Calif.) led the team with five blocks (one solo)

UP NEXT
Gallaudet (2-0 United East) will dive back into conference play this weekend as the Bison will play four United East Conference matches in two days. GU gets things started on Saturday, Oct. 23, at Penn St.-Abington at 11:30 a.m. against the host Nittany Lions (9-14, 0-4 United East) followed by a match against Wells College (7-13, 1-3 United East) at 1:30 p.m.
