Bison seven-match win streak snapped by Catholic


WASHINGTON – It was a short trip within the confines of the District of Columbia as Gallaudet University traveled to The Catholic University of America on Wednesday night for a non-conference women’s volleyball match against the crosstown rival. In the end, the Cardinals handed the Bison a 3-0 loss; 23-25, 16-25, 23-25, to snap GU’s seven-match win streak.

Gallaudet (14-11) led 20-16 in the first set and 20-18 in the third set but lost both to Catholic (10-12) as the host outscored the visitors, 9-3 and 7-3 in the respective sets. 

Sophomore Hannah Weiss (Riverside, Calif.) led the Bison with a career-high 10 kills followed by freshman outside hitter Citrine Lummer (Frederick, Md.) with eight kills, nine digs and two service aces. Junior setter Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) passed out 28 assists and served up three aces while fellow junior opposite Emily Wright (Penn Valley, Calif.) matched Giuntoli with three aces to go with seven kills, one block solo and one block assist. Junior libero Leila Sicoli (Austin, Texas) matched Lummer with a team best nine digs and served up one ace. 

Catholic was led by Olivia Blondin’s 13-kill performance while setter Sydney Sheppard tallied 33 assists and eight digs in the win.

GU has a big United East Conference weekend in Lancaster, Pa., this Saturday, Oct. 15, as the Bison (2-0 United East) go up against the host Chargers from Lancaster Bible College (12-8, 2-0 United East) at noon followed by a showdown with SUNY Morrisville (14-7, 2-0 United East).
