Blue Jays Split in Tri-Match on Senior Day

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.—The Elizabethtown men’s volleyball team split with Rutgers-Newark and Penn St.-Schuylkill on Saturday as they celebrated their seniors prior to the final match of the day. Etown fell to the Scarlet Raiders, 3-1 in conference play before sweeping the Lions, 3-0.

RUTGERS-NEWARK 3; ELIZABETHTOWN 1

Elizabethtown came out swinging in set one vs. Rutgers-Newark. The Blue Jays jumped to an 11-6 lead after going on a 7-1 run. Trey Weedon, Nick Chapman, and Logan Smith contributed kills on the run. The Scarlet Raiders added four straight before Etown would add four in a row to bring the score to 15-10. Newark came within two of Etown after an ace and then took over the lead at 19-18 after a four-point run. Elizabethtown ended the set recording the final seven points to win, 25-19.

To start set two, Rutgers-Newark came out to a 7-2 lead following a kill. The two teams traded service errors to bring the score to 9-13. Two consecutive kills from Weedon kept Etown within five of the Scarlet Raiders. The Raiders then took a 22-14 and Etown couldn’t recover as Newark ended the set with two kills to win, 25-16.

Set three started close as two kills from Chapman tied up the set at 8-8. Rutgers-Newark took the lead after three straight points to lead, 12-9. The Blue Jays went on a 4-1 run to again tie up the set with the help from Smith and Nate Seeger. After trading points, Newark then jumped to a 23-17 lead after rattling off five in a row. Chapman and Cody Boyer added Etown’s final kills before the Raiders won, 25-19.
