KSO Spid Sarajevo of Bosnia and Herzegovina finished with the gold medal, beating Kyiv Ukraine in the final of the 2023 Men’s EuroLeague, while last year’s winners Sinovi Bosne Lukavac took bronze with their win over Serbian club OKI Banja Luka on Sunday in Fermo, Italy.
KSO Spid Sarajevo outclassed Kyiv Ukraine 3-1 (25-13, 25-20, 21-25, 25-14). The Bosnians were off to a good start, taking an early 7-5 edge in the opening set. As the play progressed, the Bosnians kept their distance from the Ukrainians with a bigger lead that ended the set in their favour 25-13.
The Sarajevo-based club continued to put pressure in the next frame, but their rivals gave them a good fight. However, Spid still prevailed in the much tighter second set 25-20. The Ukrainians fought back and snatched the 25-21 win in the third set to trail 2-1.
In the fourth set, the Bosnian side showed their resilience and did not allow any further surges from the opposing side. An ace by Sabahudin Delalic clinched championship point at 25-14.
Meanwhile, their compatriots SKISO Sinovi Bosne Lukavac closed their bronze medal game against OKI Banja Luka in straight-set fashion (25-19, 25-15, 25-15). These two squads also met last year in the gold medal match, where the Bosnians exerted their dominance to win the title.
Led by seasoned player Ermin Jusufovic, Sinovi Bosne dictated the tempo of the first set from start to finish. They first took the lead 11-7 and extended it to a six-point lead 21-15, before they closed the opening set 25-19.
They controlled the next two frames with double 25-15 set results to still have their spot in the EuroLeague podium.
