GULF SHORES, Ala. — No. 2[3] UCLA (34-9) saw its season come to an end on Sunday afternoon in the contender’s bracket final of the 2022 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship, 3-2, to No. 4 [5] Florida State (33-10) at Gulf Beach Place. A total of 10 of the 13 sets played between the Bruins and the Seminoles were decided by the minimum of two points.
UCLA fell to 12-8 all-time against the Seminoles. With the win, FSU snapped an eight-match losing streak to the Bruins. The 34 wins by the Bruins in 2022 are the third-most in program history.
UCLA took a 1-0 lead when Jaden Whitmarsh and Devon Newberry (28-7) defeated FSU’s Alaina Chacon and Madison Fitzpatrick on court two, 25-23, 19-21, 16-14.
FSU tied the dual at 1-1 when Morgan Chacon and Jordan Polo outlasted Marlie Monserez and Rileigh Powers (10-5) on court four, 19-21, 25-23, 16-14.
UCLA’s Lea Monkhouse and Jessie Smith (14-4) put the Bruins back in front at 2-1 with a 21-19, 21-19, win on court three over Kate Privett and Anna Long.
FSU tied the dual at 2-2 after Raelyn White and Caitlin Moon defeated UCLA’s freshman duo of Sophie Moore and Natalie Myszkoski (28-7), 21-15, 21-18, on court five.
It all came down to a third set on court one where Maddie Anderson and Brook Bauer clinched the dual win for the Seminoles with a 21-16, 21-23, 15-13, win over Lexy Denaburg and Abby Van Winkle (26-10).
