COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 7 Ohio State Buckeyes (5-4) swept (25-16, 25-8, 26-24) Iowa (6-6) on the road to begin Big Ten play on Friday evening.
After being tied early, Ohio State took control of the first set, winning by a 25-16 margin on a 5-0 run to close the set. The Buckeyes took control of the second set early and cruised to a 25-8 set win. The third set was close throughout with the Hawkeyes leading 24-22 before four-consecutive Buckeye points sealed the sweep.
How it Happened
Emily Londot began the match with a kill. The teams traded points with the Buckeyes staying in the lead until the Hawkeyes led 5-4. The score was tied at every point until a 4-0 Ohio State run forced an Iowa timeout with the Buckeyes in front by an 11-8 margin. OSU stretched the lead to 13-9 and then 16-11 on back-to-back Iowa attack errors, forcing a second Hawkeye timeout. Ohio State led by as much as 20-13 following a pair of 4-0 runs before Iowa scored three-unanswered points to cut the lead to 20-16. The Buckeyes sealed the 25-16 set win with a 5-0 run capped by a kill from Jenaisya Moore.
Iowa scored the first two points in the second set before three-straight kills from Ohio State. The Buckeyes put together a 4-1 run to lead 7-4 and force Iowa to call timeout. OSU continued its run to 5-0 and then strung together another 5-0 run, including two aces from Sydney Taylor, to lead 16-5. The Buckeyes sealed the 25-8 set win on a 5-0 run and a block from Mac Podraza and Rylee Rader.
Ohio State scored first on an Iowa error to begin the third set. The beginning of the set was tight with neither team leading by more than two points nor scoring more than three-unanswered points until a 4-0 Iowa run forced an Ohio State timeout trailing 15-12. The Hawkwyes had their largest run and lead of the evening at 16-12. After trailing 17-13, Ohio State scored the next four points to tie the set at 17 amidst an Iowa timeout, forcing a second quick timeout. The Buckeyes took a 20-19 lead, but three-consecutive Hawkeye points caused an OSU timeout down 22-20. Ohio State trailed 24-22 before a 4-0 run ended the set with the Buckeyes winning 26-24 on a kill from Londot.
