For Ukraine’s Denys Bytchenko, Paris 2024 was not the destination but another critical step in his team’s journey. After his team’s seventh-place finish, the sitting volleyball superstar remains optimistic and focused on the future, determined to build on the experience and take their game to the next level.

“Of course, winning every match is the best that you can feel in any sport. But this is only one match. We did everything and gave everything that we have, so we have this victory in our last match,” Bytchenko said after their final match in Paris, emphasising the importance of effort over outcome.

Now a two-time Paralympian, Bytchenko is thankful for the opportunity to compete at the highest level once again. “It’s so cool when you come to a foreign land and say that you’re competing in the Paralympic Games. This is just great because this is the highest in the step in the ladder. Everybody dreams to play here, and I feel lucky and thankful that I can participate for the second time here in Paris,” he shared.

Bytchenko is not one to rest on his laurels, though. With the Paralympics behind him, his focus is already on analysing the team’s performance and preparing for future competitions.

“We have all records of our games. We know about our mistakes, our errors. Our coaches made a big list of observations, what’s needs to be done in which area. We will work on these things,” he explained.

Looking to the future, Bytchenko is eager to get back to work and continue the progress made in Paris.

“In a month or two, we will resume our training camp, and we will be preparing for other tournaments like European Championship, World Championship and other events. Even smaller tournaments would be very valuable for us,” he added.

For Bytchenko, the Paralympics were another rung on the ladder, a key moment in a journey that is far from over.
