BYU, Pepperdine, Lindenwood gets men's volleyball upsets; San Diego wins in PVF

BYU and Pepperdine pulled off MPSF upsets and Lindenwood had one in the MIVA on Friday in NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball.

In the Pro Volleyball Federation, San Diego won the first set and then the first match in franchise history.

The MPSF has three matches, with No. 2 Grand Canyon home for USC, UCLA back at BYU and Stanford at Pepperdine.

Two Big West teams play out of conference when CSUN entertains the MIVA’s Lewis and UC Irvine goes to the MPSF’s Concordia Irvine.

The MIVA slate shows Ohio State is back at Queens, Loyola Chicago at Lindenwood and McKendree at Purdue Fort Wayne.

EIVA action has its three ranked teams in action, with Penn State home for NJIT, Princeton at Harvard and George Mason at Charleston.

There are three NEC matches with Daemen home for LIU, FDU at D’Youville and Saint Francis (PA) at Sacred Heart.

Independent Lincoln Memorial is home for Lees-McRae of Conference Carolinas, which has three league matches, Erskine at Barton, Emmanuel at Mount Olive and North Greenville at King.

Two SIAC teams play when Edward Waters is home for Talladega and Kentucky State entertains independent Maryville.

Friday men

Top-ranked Long Beach State (12-1) beat visiting Lewis (8-7) of the MIVA in four as Clarke Godbold had 16 kills and Simon Torwie — who had no errors in 16 attacks — and Skyler Varga had 13 each …

No. 3 Hawai’i (12-1) swept independent Missouri S&T (8-8) again. Hawai’i, which hit .394 and had 12 aces, got kills from nine players. Chaz Galloway had nine kills, hit .583, and had two aces and two digs …

The Big West’s No. 5 UC Irvine (9-4) hit .494 and swept Concordia (5-4) of the MPSF. Hilir Henno had 12 kills and hit .474 and William D’Arcy had 11 and hit .409 … 

In its Big West-opening match, No. 20 UC San Diego (6-8, 1-0) hit .402 and beat visiting No. 18 UC Santa Barbara (5-10, 0-1) in four behind 13 kills from Sebastian Lara, who had one error in 21 swings, two assists, six digs and a solo block. UCSB’s Geste Bianchi had 19 kills … 

There were three MPSF matches.

Second-ranked Grand Canyon (12-0, 3-0 MPSF), the nation’s only unbeaten team, beat visiting No. 10 USC (10-5, 2-1) in four as Cameron Thorne and Jackson Hickman had 14 kills each. Thorne had one error in 17 attacks and Hickman one error in 26 swings …
