Bears Begin Season At Army Tournament
BERKELEY – California volleyball released its 2023 schedule on Thursday as the Golden Bears look forward to a new season featuring a number of marquee opponents, both at Haas Pavilion and on the road.
The Bears are slated to begin play at the Army Tournament (Aug. 25-26) before returning home to Berkeley for a dual-host tournament with Saint Mary’s on Sept. 1-2, with the two programs later facing off on Sept. 6. Cal will then head to the Texas State Tournament, where it will open against NCAA Tournament team Southeastern Louisiana before flying to Reno, Nevada, for the Nevada Tournament on Sept. 8-9.
The Bears then return home for the start of their Pac-12 slate as they welcome rival Stanford to Haas Pavilion on Sept. 19 for the first Big Spike of the season. The Cardinal (No. 6) are one of three Pac-12 teams who ended last season on the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 list, as well as Oregon (No. 7) and Washington State (No. 24).
In total, the Bears will go head-to-head against seven teams who played in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, including Southeastern Louisiana (Sept. 8), Stanford (Sept. 19, Nov. 24), Washington State (Oct. 6, Nov. 5), Washington (Oct. 8, Nov. 3), USC (Oct. 15, Nov. 17), Oregon (Oct. 20, Nov. 12) and Colorado (Nov. 22).
Cal will also play against UCLA and USC for the final time as Pac-12 opponents, hosting both schools on the weekend of Oct. 13-15 and later traveling to Los Angeles to face the Trojans and Bruins on Nov. 17-19. The Bears will have 10 of their matches televised on the Pac-12 Networks, beginning with their Sept. 19 clash with Stanford, and 13 total home appearances.
The team will return 11 women from last year’s roster, including three seniors in Tara DeSa, Kendall Jensen and Sam Taumoepeau; those three will be honored by the program at Cal’s Nov. 22 home match against Colorado.
Ticket information for the 2023 season will be announced at a later date.
