Career Milestones Reached as #11 Sand Devils Win Two


LONG BEACH, Calif. – Three pairs went undefeated as No. 11 Sun Devil Beach Volleyball won both duals to close out the LBSU Tournament on Saturday, sweeping CSUN before beating Texas 3-2.

Arizona State (11-3) won both matches to continue its strong start in 2024, maintaining the best start through 14 games. At the LBSU Tournament this weekend, ASU went 3-1. 

Two Sand Devils reached 50 career wins today. Graduate Lexi Sweeney and senior Taryn Ames got their 50 individual career win, becoming the eighth and ninth Sun Devils to do so. They’re now tied for seventh in the ASU record book for career individual wins.

Three pairs went 2-0 today. The No. 2 pair of Arden Besecker and Ava Williamson continued their dominant weekend, winning both matches to be a perfect 4-0 over the two days. They are now up to 11-3 on the year, the best record on the team. The No. 1 pair of Daniella Kensinger and Anya Pemberton also won both matches, along with a new pair of Ava Kirunchyk and Carys Thomas.

Game One: #11 ASU 5, CSUN 0

ASU picked up their third sweep of the season by taking care of business against CSUN (9-5). All five courts won in straight sets, including the new pairing of Ava Kirunchyk and Carys Thomas on court four.

  2. Arden Besecker/Ava Williamson (ASU) def. Eknoian/Mae (CSUN) 21-15, 21-16
  3. Taryn Ames/Lexi Sweeney (ASU) def. Lindhardt/Miles (CSUN) 21-11, 21-14
  4. Ava Kirunchyk/Carys Thomas (ASU) def. Jarosz/Sweeting (CSUN) 21-17, 21-11
  5. Adriana Nieves Papaleo/Kendall Whitmarsh (ASU) def. Bazylevych/Coggins (CSUN) 21-15, 21-14

Game Two: #11 ASU 3, Texas 2
All five matches were finished in two sets, but Texas (1-3) was able to take two off of Arizona State. Kirunchyk and Thomas in their second match together moved down to the No. 5 spot and dominated, winning by 11 or more points in both sets.
