ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.– The Elizabethtown men’s volleyball team got back into the win column Tuesday evening inside Thompson Gymnasium as they defeated Widener, 3-1.
The first set was tight as Elizabethtown fired off four straight points followed by Widener’s four straight points to start as the Pride led by one. The two teams then started trading points before Etown took a two point lead at 10-8 after kills from Kyle McKiernan and Blake Hildebrand. The Blue Jays held their two point lead as Nick Chapman and Tony Camillo added kills. Two Widener attack errors sandwiched a service ace by Chapman which extended Etown’s lead, 18-14. Cheston Jacobs ended the Blue Jays 5-1 run at 23-16. Kills from McKiernan and Chapman ended the set with the Blue Jays on top, 25-18.
Etown jumped ahead at the start of set two, 10-3 led by Camillo, Steve Swain and Chapman. Widener came within three of the Blue Jays after three consecutive points. Widener kept chipping away at Elizabethtown’s lead as they stayed within three after a Pride kill. Two back to back kills from McKiernan extended the Blue Jays lead, 19-15. Widener picked up three more points in a row before a kill from Chapman and Hildebrand sent it home, 25-21.
The next set was a bit closer as Widener took set three, 28-26. Elizabethtown started off with a 6-3 lead before Widener picked up two in a row to trail the Blue Jays by one. After a 5-2 run from Etown, the Blue Jays were up, 12-8. Through the end of the set the two teams would go back-n-forth, tying up the set again and again. A Widener service error…
