China continued their dominance over Canada in sitting volleyball, securing a comprehensive 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-16) victory in the 2024 WPV Women’s Super 6 at Parc des Sports de Vandoeuvre in Nancy, France.
The encounter revisited the fierce rivalry seen at the 2023 WPV Sitting Volleyball World Cup final in Cairo, Egypt, where China also emerged victorious.
China got off to a flying start in the opening set, leveraging Canada’s consecutive errors to establish an early 4-1 lead. Despite a strong middle attack from Julie Kozun, which briefly halted the Chinese momentum, China quickly regained control with their swift defensive manoeuvres, extending their advantage to 10-3. Canada’s attempts to narrow the gap saw them cut China’s lead to 21-14, coming from a series of well-coordinated plays. However, China’s resilience and consistent pressure allowed them to close out the set 25-19.
Canada came out strong in the second set, riding the momentum from their late surge in the first set to take an early 3-0 lead. However, China’s powerful attack game soon overturned this deficit, surging ahead to a 7-5 lead. China’s rhythm and sharp attack swings saw them establish a commanding 13-8 lead. Canada called for a timeout at 16-10, but it did little to disrupt China’s flow. The Chinese side’s quick net defence thwarted repeated attacks from Heidi Peters and Danielle Ellis, as they comfortably closed out the set 25-13.
In the third set, Canada once again started well, securing a 5-1 advantage. This time, they managed to hold a comfortable lead for a while. However, China’s relentless pace and tactical adjustments saw them swing the momentum in their favour, gaining a 14-12 lead and forcing Canada to call a timeout. China’s efficiency and composure shone through as they extended their lead and ultimately won the set 25-16, thereby securing the match 3-0.
