WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University opened up United East Conference play here Saturday afternoon with two victories as the Bison defeated St. Mary’s College of Maryland and Penn College in straight sets in the Field House.
The two wins gives Gallaudet coach Lynn Ray Boren his 350th career win in his 16th season at the helm.
Gallaudet (11-10, 2-0 UE) began its day with a 25-21, 25-23, 25-23 win over St. Mary’s (5-10, 1-1 UE) before the Bison finished the tri-meet with a 25-11, 25-10, 25-14 win over Penn College (1-9, 0-2 UE). The second match of the tri-meet saw the St. Mary’s Seahawks defeat the Penn College Wildcats in three sets; 25-11, 25-15, 25-14.
Senior outside hitter Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) led the way against St. Mary’s with a double-double as she tallied 17 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore opposite Emily Wright (Auburn, Calif.) added 16 kills while senior opposite Elina Rubinshteyn (Austin, Texas) was the third Bison in double digits with 10 kills. Freshman setter Alyssa Glennon (Buda, Texas) passed out a career-high 39 assists and made 12 digs.
The Bison posted a season-high 20 service aces in the win over Penn College as freshman outside hitter Emily Nover (District Heights, Md.) led the way with a career best six aces. Glennon added four aces to go with 27 assists. Sophomore libero Leila Sicoli (Austin, Texas) finished with 12 digs while Wright added seven kills.
