COMPETITION HEATS UP ON DAY 4 OF AVC CHALLENGE CUP FOR WOMEN

Manila, Philippines, May 25, 2024 – Hosts Philippines, Hong Kong China, Kazakhstan and Australia improved their standings in respective pools after charting victories on Day 4 of the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women. 

 

The main event on a rainy Saturday evening saw the Philippines gift the home crowd with their third straight win in Pool A after taking straight sets on Iran 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-15).

Anne Angel Canino continued to prove her scoring prowess as the top scorer with 16 points, while Cherry Ann Ronda provided another 12 points from dazzling plays that wowed the crowd at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Coach Jorge Souza De Brito played with slightly different roster of players, who all delivered in key moments of the victory. 

In Pool B, Hong Kong, China picked up another victory after a straight-sets match 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-12) against Singapore. 

The EAVA side, on their third participation in as many editions, are fielding in a mix of more experienced players with younger ones. 

Rookie Shum Lam (17 points) and mainstay Chim Wing Lam (15 points) proved that the connection and combination of youth and experience works, for Hong Kong, China’s second win in Manila. 

Later in Pool B, Kazakhstan sealed their second win via a 3-0 match (25-17, 25-13, 25-22) against Indonesia.

Zhanna Syroyeshkina’s 23-point performance provided a big boost to the Kazakh offense. The CAVA side also fired 8 aces which showed their quality and strategy from the service line. 

Earlier in Pool A, Australia outplayed  India 3-1 (26-24, 25-16, 19-25, 29-27), with the help of Caitlin Tipping’s 27-point haul. 

The Volleyroos showed resilience and composure against a tough, unrelenting opponent. Australia dominated in all fields, with 58 attacks, 16 blocks and 11 service winners. 

The Preliminary Round concludes on Sunday to determine the rankings and pairings for the semi-finals showdown on Tuesday. By Wednesday, the new champions will be crowned, and will earn the right to compete in the Volleyball World Challenger Cup set from July 4-7, 2024, also in Manila, Philippines.
