Cortland Drops Non-League Tilt to Ithaca

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women’s volleyball team battled versus visiting Ithaca in each set of a non-league match but came up on the short end of a 25-19, 26-24, 25-22 decision to the Bombers. Both teams are now 5-2 with the outcome. 
 
Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) led Cortland with nine kills and Allie Sturgess (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) and Alexa Guedez (Mamaroneck/Rye Neck) each totaled six kills. Giovanna Rossi (Nichols/Tioga) added five kills and Emalee Ballou (Eden) and Lexy Bloss (York, PA/Dallastown Area) finished with four kills each. Ballou and Guedez each totaled four blocks, followed by Bloss with three. Meadow Wittman (Colden/Springville Griffith Institute) led the Red Dragons with 15 assists and three aces and added seven digs. Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) was the team leader with nine digs. 
 
Faith Sabatier led Ithaca with 12 kills and Gabriela Gonzalez-Abreu finished with 11 kills. Wesley Slavin dished out 37 assists and Julia Costa ended with 19 digs. 
 
Ithaca hit .245 for the match, highlighted by a .464 attack percentage (17 kills, four errors, 28 attempts) in the opening set. Cortland ended at .165 for the match, with its best effort a .205 mark in the third set. 
 
The first set featured eight ties and three lead changes. The set was tied at 12-12 before Ithaca used a 6-0 run to earn some separation. The second set was tied on 12 occasions. Cortland led 22-21 after a kill by Bloss, but a Sabatier kill and a Cortland error put the Bombers up, 23-22. Pilkey tied the set with a kill and, after a Cortland error, the Red Dragons tied the set at 24-24 on an Ithaca service error….
