Cougs start slow, heat up quickly in sweep over UC Irvine

PULLMAN, Wash. β€” 17th-ranked Washington State volleyball (6-1) finished with an attack percentage of .458 (47-9-83) as a team despite a sluggish start in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-12) win over UC Irvine (2-5) Wednesday night in Bohler Gym.

Magda Jehlarova finished with nine kills on only 10 swings (9-0-10, .900), eclipsing the 1,000 career kills total for her career in the process.Β  Pia Timmer finished with a team-leading 11 kills and a .474 attack percentage as Argentina Ung dished out another great performance setting the Cougs’ offense.Β  Ung finished with four kills of her own to go along with 40 assists and one block assist on the defensive side of the net.

Libero Karly Basham had 15 digs and a pair of aces and freshman defensive specialist Emma Barbero saw extended action on the night, finishing with two aces of her own to go along with two digs and three receptions.

UC Irvine jumped ahead early and held onto a four-point cushion late in the first set, forcing a WSU timeout at 20-16.Β  Jehlarova grabbed one of her match high seven first-set kills to jumpstart a 5-1 run that evened the set at 21-21.Β  She would later go on toΒ put down a kill to even the set at 21-21, gave the Cougs set point with a kill to make it 24-21, and finished things off with her seventh kill of the set to hand the Cougars the 25-22 opening set-set win.
