Edwarda de Oliveira (Duda) helped Brazil continue their dominant run in women’s sitting volleyball at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, securing a convincing 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-15) win against Slovenia in North Paris Arena on Monday.
Duda contributed 15 points with 12 attacks and three aces, while Suellen Dellangelica Lima added 11 points, including six attacks and five service winners. Klara Vrabic was Slovenia’s lone bright spot with 18 points, but it was not enough to prevent the South Americans from clinching their third consecutive victory. Brazil outperformed Slovenia in all departments, recording 35 attacks, nine blocks and 12 service aces.
Brazil set the tone early in the first set, establishing a commanding lead with aggressive serving and solid blocking. Duda and Suellen’s early service ace and powerful attacks put Brazil ahead, with Nathalie Filomen’s ace highlighting the sequence to lead 12-7. Despite Slovenia’s efforts, errors plagued their game, and Brazil capitalised, extending their lead to 20-12. Brazil sealed the first set 25-14 when Slovenia’s Barbara Kocmur misjudged a reception, giving Brazil the set point.
The second set saw a closer contest as Slovenia fought back, but Brazil maintained their edge. Slovenia briefly narrowed the gap to 17-13 with Vrabic’s spikes, yet Brazil’s resilience shone through. Suellen’s consistent serving pressured Slovenia into making errors, pushing Brazil to a 24-17 advantage. A block point by Nathalie Filomena concluded the set at 25-18 after Slovenia’s Lena Gabrscek’s attack fell short.
In the third and final set, Brazil quickly regained control, racing to an early lead of 9-5. Slovenia struggled to match Brazil’s intensity, with errors creeping into their play. Duda’s relentless attacks and Nathalie Filomena’s sharp spikes continued to dominate. Slovenia managed a few brief rallies, buts an ace ended the match at 25-15, securing a comprehensive victory for Brazil.
