Duke Defeats Elon on the Road, 3-1

ELON, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team secured its fifth consecutive win Tuesday by defeating Elon, 3-1 (25-16, 24-26, 25-20, 25-21), at the Schar Center. 

How it Happened

  • The Blue Devils were led offensively by Gracie Johnson with 13 kills, followed by Rachel Richardson and Lizzie Fleming with 11 each. Fleming also paced the unit at the net with six blocks while Rylie Kadel and Moorea Wood each added three.
  • Setter Devon Chang dished 42 assists, her sixth 40+ assist match this season, while libero Nikki Underwood tallied 21 digs. 
  • After trailing 12-8, the Blue Devils went on a 15-3 run to end the opening set as Fleming played to a flawless .833 hitting percentage with five kills on no errors. 
  • The Phoenix led 17-15 in the second before Kadel knocked in her fourth kill of the evening on a nice rightside slide. The Blue Devils capitalized on a few Elon attack errors, allowing Duke to string together a 4-0 run and regain the lead (20-18). All tied up at 24, libero Caroline Doyle dished an assist before Elon’s fourth ace of the evening tied the match up at 1-1. 
  • In the third frame, Duke led 20-17 as Chang set up a nice ball for Johnson’s ninth kill of the match, forcing the Phoenix into a timeout. Following the quick break, Elon cut into Duke’s lead (21-20), but Duke would not be forced away. The Blue Devils came out firing on all cylinders late and ended the set with a 4-0 run with kills from Fleming, Johnson and Richardson.
