DURHAM – The Duke volleyball team, in partnership with NC Central volleyball, held a community event at the Boys & Girls Club in Durham on Wednesday. The event was held prior to the historic matchup between the two teams on Sept. 13 on NC Central’s campus.
The match against the Eagles on Sept. 13 will mark the first time a Duke team has competed on NC Central’s campus since the 1970s. The historic match will also serve as a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Durham and Orange Counties.
“Duke volleyball is so grateful for the opportunity to join North Carolina Central volleyball in supporting the Boys & Girls Club of Durham & Orange Counties this fall,” associate head coach Kellie Catanach Johnson said. “All of the credit for organizing our visit and the fundraiser goes to the NCCU staff and Andrew Borresen at the B&GC. It’s critical that each of our student-athletes understands the importance of giving back and the capacity they have for impact and this was a tremendous opportunity to both serve our Durham community and grow the game of volleyball. We’re looking forward to continuing our partnership with NCCU and the Boys & Girls Club in the future!”
The hour-long event began with a facility tour directed by Boys & Girls Clubs of Durham and Orange Counties CEO Jerome Levisy and director of resource development Andrew Borresen. After the tour, team members from the Blue Devils and Eagles conducted volleyball exercises around the gymnasium with club members and guided them through serving, setting, and hitting drills.
Levisy spoke about the effect a collaborative event can have on a younger generation of scholars. “The Boys & Girls Club preaches the importance of community collaborations. Having two historic universities like Duke and North Carolina Central come together in partnership really shows our youth that we can do things together and still have fun competing.”
