The Muhlenberg volleyball team opened its 2023 home schedule with an impressive 3-0 sweep of Stockton.
Senior Alyssa Faville recorded 20 digs in the match to run her career total to 1,012 and become the 15th player in program history to top 1,000.
The Mules (2-1) trailed only once the entire night (5-4 early in the second set) in toppling a Stockton squad that has won 11 New Jersey Athletic Conference championships in the last 17 years.
Sophomore Christina Marcin led the attack with 13 kills in only 24 swings, hitting at a .417 percentage. Junior Esmae Oehler also was efficient with her hitting, recording 11 kills with only one error in 25 attempts. She also had 14 digs.
Senior Christina Dalton finished with 14 assists, 8 digs and 5 aces, while freshman setter Jenny Ryan recorded a career-high 12 assists.
Kills by juniors Rachel Jacobs and Brooke Shiver, followed by an ace from Dalton, got the Mules off to a 3-0 start in the opening set, and they never looked back. Consecutive kills by Marcin capped a 4-0 run that made it 15-6, and Muhlenberg went on to win, 25-13.
Dalton served three straight aces in the second set, a 25-17 win. The third set was closer, but two kills by Marcin sandwiched around Ryan’s ace extended a 21-18 lead to 24-18, and a kill by Jacobs finished off the match.
Faville, who reached her milestone early in the second set, achieved the mark in a little more than two seasons. Her career average of 5.50 digs per set would shatter the school record of 4.81.
