After the first day of the Doha 4-star main draw, several top teams are facing an early goodbye in today’s second pool matches.
US veterans Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena will need to go up against Austria’s Huber/ Dressler in a “win-or-go-home” match. They are facing early elimination after losing their first main draw match in a nail-biter against French team Aye/Gauthier-Rat in the tie-break overtime (17:21, 24:22, 23:25). In a similar situation is Polish top team Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak who lost their first match to 2017 world champion Evandro and his partner Guto of Brazil. Doha champions Grimalt/Grimalt of Chile who beat Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena in the 2019 Doha final, will play against Turkey in a further pool loser match.
On the women’s side, Canadian beach volleyball gypsy Brandie Wilkerson and her partner Heather Bansley will face Finland’s Lehtonen/ Ahtiainen after being defeated by Wojtasik/ Kociolek of Poland in straight sets. In another knock-out match Brazil’s number-1 team Agatha/Duda will battle Italy’s Menegatti/ Orsi Toth.
After the end of pool play, today’s schedule also has the Round of 24 and Round of 16 matches for both genders. Quarter- and semifinals will be played tomorrow, the medal matches are scheduled for Friday.
