TROY, N.Y. – Week two of the fall season brought more excellent play from Union College student-athletes and teams last week, with four players earning weekly awards from the Liberty League and five more earning spots on the weekly honor roll.
Women’s Tennis Singles Performer of the Week: Chara Meidani
Meidani won three matches to earn the “A” Singles title at this weekend’s Union Invitational. She posted an 8-5 win over SUNY New Paltz’s Sydney Sladicka and outlasted St. Lawrence University’s Molly Jespersen in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-4), to reach Sunday’s final. There, she dispatched Ariane Karera of St. Lawrence by a 6-3, 7-5 score to win the “A” Singles title and thwart Karera’s attempt to go through all three Union entries in the bracket.
Women’s Soccer Defensive Performer of the Week: Maya Koster
Koster did not allow a goal in 135 minutes of action last week, stopping nine shots to help Union to a pair of shutout victories. The sophomore kept the sheet clean over the first 45 minutes to earn the win in Thursday’s 2-0 victory over Smith College, then played the full 90 minutes on Saturday against Endicott College, making nine saves to earn her second collegiate shutout in a 1-0 victory.
Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Week: Calista Finkelstein
Finkelstein reached the finals of the “C” Singles bracket at this weekend’s Union Invitational. She dropped only two games in her two matches on Saturday, defeating SUNY New Paltz’s Olivia Kunz and St. Lawrence University’s Elisa Iuri both by the score of 8-1. Her only loss came to teammate Kennedy Alexis in the “C” final, taking the first set 6-3 before losing the second 7-5 and falling 10-7 in a supertiebreaker.
Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week: Jackson Magee
Magee gave up one goal and made 11 saves in two matches for Union last week, helping the team to a 2-1 overall week. The first-year stopped five shots to earn his first collegiate shutout in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over SUNY New Paltz, and then made six stops and allowed one goal in a tough 1-0 loss to Rutgers-Newark on Saturday.
