Four volleyball Badgers named All-America


MADISON, Wis. – Four members of the third-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team have been named 2023 All-Americans by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), the organization announced on Wednesday.

Senior Sarah Franklin earned first-team honors after earning third-team accolades in 2022. She becomes just the fifth Badger to earn a first-team award.  Junior Anna Smrek earns her first All-America honor, being recognized on the second team. Sophomore Carter Booth also becomes a first-time All-American with her third-team honor. Senior Devyn Robinson earns her third All-America award, being named to the honorable mention team this season.  

The 2023 Big Ten Player of the Year and the 2023 AVCA Northeast Regional Player of the Year, Franklin leads the Badgers with 4.19 kills per set, which ranks 28th nationally. The 6-foot-4 outside hitter has double-figure kills in 28 matches this season, including five matches with 20-plus kills.  Franklin is also hitting a season best .305 percent. She averages 4.65 points per set, adding 0.53 blocks and 0.19 service aces per set. One of the Badgers’ primary passers, the Lake Worth, Florida, native adds 1.94 digs per set. Franklin was named the AVCA National Player of the Week on Nov. 28 to go along with three Big Ten Player of the Week awards this year.

Smrek earned her first All-Big Ten and AVCA All-Northeast honors in her break-out season. The 6-foot-9 right-side hitter ranks second on the team with 2.65 kills per set, putting away double-figure kills in 12 matches. Hitting a season-best .396, the opposite comes in 23rd in the NCAA in attack percentage.  She also  third on the team with 1.16 blocks per set.

A 6-foot-7 middle blocker, Booth rank third nationally with 1.60 blocks per set while also ranking third in the NCAA with a .444 hitting percentage. The sophomore also adds 1.80 kills per set.  Booth earned first-team All-Big Ten and first-team AVCA All-Northeast honors this season and was a two-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week.

Robinson ranks third on the team with 2.48 kills per set, tallying double-figure kills in 11 matches. The 6-foot-2 right-side hitter tied her career high with 21 kills vs. Arkansas in late August. She also adds 0.92 blocks per set, which ranks fourth on the squad. Robinson earned second-team All-Big Ten honors and first-team AVCA…
