Gallaudet Athletics celebrates Title IX 50th anniversary, plans yearlong recognition


WASHINGTON – Title IX got signed into law 50 years ago on June 23, 1972, and has played an important role in creating more opportunities for women’s sports. The Gallaudet University Athletics Department is excited to celebrate this milestone today and throughtout the coming year. The department plans to share different stories about Bison female student-athletes and coaches and what Title IX means to them and how that impacted GU athletics throughout the coming year.

Title IX states: No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

Title IX applies to schools, local and state educational agencies, and other institutions that receive federal financial assistance from the Department. These recipients include approximately 17,600 local school districts, over 5,000 postsecondary institutions, and charter schools, for-profit schools, libraries, and museums. Also included are vocational rehabilitation agencies and education agencies of 50 states, the District of Columbia, and territories of the United States.
