Gallaudet clinches United East playoff berth with Saturday sweep on Senior Day


WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women’s volleyball team will have a chance to defend its United East Conference championship this November as the Bison clinched a playoff berth here Saturday after it won two matches against Penn St. Harrisburg and Penn St.-Abington on Senior Day and Homecoming weekend.

Gallaudet (17-13, 5-1 United East) was in a close match against Penn St. Harrisburg to start the day as the visiting Lions took the second and third sets but GU rallied to win the fourth and fifth sets en route to the 3-2 victory; 25-14, 19-25, 18-25, 25-20, 15-12.

Junior opposite Emily Wright (Penn Valley, Calif.) led the way with 21 kills, six digs, five service aces and two blocks (one solo). Freshman outside hitter Citrine Lummer (Frederick, Md.) added a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs and two aces. Junior middle hitter Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) recorded 10 kills, six digs and two blocks (one solo). Junior setter Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) passed out 45 assists and served up five aces. GU finished the match with 17 service aces.

Penn St. Harrisburg (13-10, 3-3 United East) defeated Penn St.-Abington in the second match of the day as Harrisburg won 25-17, 25-17, 25-20.

In the third and final match of the day, Gallaudet dispatched Penn St.-Abington (10-8, 2-4 United East) in straight sets 25-10, 25-17, 25-6. Wright led the way with 12 kills and four block assists against the Nittany Lions. Lummer added eight kills, eight digs, one ace and one block assist. Sophomore middle hitter Anya Pothorski (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded nine kills and three block assists. Giuntoli passed out 30 assists, made nine digs and served up a team best four aces. 

After the completion of the match the volleyball program paid tribute to its senior class, academically, in Wright and junior Malia Zornoza (Riverside, Calif.). 

GU currently sits in second place in the United East standings with two conference matches left on the regular-season schedule. Gallaudet will travel to Reading, Pa., next Saturday to face Penn St.-Berks and Wells College. Gallaudet is tied with Penn St.-Berks in second place with 5-1 conference records. 

UP NEXT
GU will host its final regular-season home match on Wednesday night (Oct. 26) at 7 p.m. against Marymount (Va.) University (15-13) in the Field House. The two teams met earlier this season in the Worthington Classic as the Saints won in straight sets.
