Gallaudet places 46 student-athletes on the 2021-22 United East Scholar-Athlete list


LATHAM, N.Y. – Gallaudet University placed 46 student-athletes on the 2021-22 United East Conference Scholar-Athlete list as announced by the conference. Each student-athlete was required to accumulate a 3.4 or higher grade point average for the fall and spring semesters combined and must have been in good standing on their team.

Gallaudet finished tied for eighth overall among United East institutions and six associate members. Lancaster Bible College was first with 110 honorees followed by St. Mary’s College of Maryland (104), Penn College and Penn State Harrisburg (100), Wells College (59), Penn St.-Abington (56), Penn St.-Berks (50). GU was tied with SUNY Morrisville with 46 honorees each.

Gallaudet’s record for United East Scholar-Athletes in a season is 64 set in 2019-20.

The United East honored 709 student-athletes this year from 15 different institutions who represent 31 different states and 13 different countries. GU, who completed its 12th year in the United East, had honorees hail from 16 different states and two countries.

Five Gallaudet student-athletes earned United East Scholar-Athlete honors all four years including Shane Angel (Mechanicsville, Md.), Dylan Christoffels (Methuen, Mass.), Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.), Kate Lorenzo (Omaha, Neb.), Liam Painter (Edgewood, N.M.). Since Gallaudet joined the NEAC there have only been 27 Bison to earn United East Scholar-Athlete honors all four years.

Now due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a lost year of athletics (2020-21) student-athletes had an extra year of eligibility. Emelia Beldon (Frederick, Md.) and Shawn Daniels (Lakeland, Fla.) are GU’s first student athletes to earn five United East Scholar-Athlete awards as they have been on each year’s teams since 2017-18.

GU had 26 repeat honorees from previous year’s United East Scholar-Athlete listings and 10 others earned United East Scholar-Athlete honors for a third time.

Gallaudet’s women’s sports had 36 honorees compared to 14 honorees from men’s sports. There were four student-athletes that played more than one sport, all from women’s sports. GU sponsors five women’s sports and four men’s sports that compete in the United East.

Women’s soccer led the way on the women’s side with 11 honorees followed by women’s volleyball (nine), women’s cross country and softball had six apiece while women’s basketball checked in with four.
