PITTSBURGH – Kiki Granberry and Klaudia Pawlik combined for eight blocks on Saturday at Fitzgerald Field House, but were unable to help the Lady Vols overcome No. 5 Ohio State, falling in three sets (23-25, 23-25, 16-25).
Granberry finished the match tied for the team-high in kills at seven with senior Morgahn Fingall. Granberry – a freshman from Winter Garden, Florida – hit .538 and posted five total blocks. Her block total ties her single-match career-high.
Her fellow middle blocker – Pawlik – also played well versus the Buckeyes as she scored five kills and added three blocks.
Redshirt sophomore Emily Merrick came off the bench for UT and put away six kills and threw up one block.
The opening set was a tight affair with 14 score ties and six lead changes. Granberry earned all but one of her kills in the first frame while posting a pair of blocks. Fingall notched three kills in the set, while Pawlik tallied two.
Tennessee (6-6) hit well at .269 but were plagued by untimely errors that helped the Buckeyes edge the first set, 25-23.
The second set was again tight as the Lady Vols and Buckeyes were tied 11 times and swapped the lead on seven occasions. Ohio State (4-3) entered the match averaging 14 kills per set and landed squarely on that number as it won the frame, 25-23.
Merrick earned four of her six kills in the second on a .500 hitting percentage. In the middle, Pawlik scored three kills and two blocks.
Ohio State took control of the third frame early and used an efficient attack to pull out a 25-16 victory. OSU hit .538 in the set and scored 17 kills – seven of which came from Gabby Gonzales. Jenaisya Moore and Emily Londot both tallied four kills for the Buckeyes.
