Gray Named ACC Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year

PITTSBURGH – All-American middle blocker Serena Gray headlines a program-record 13 All-ACC Academic Team selections, the conference office announced today. Gray was named Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year, alongside Louisville’s Amaya Tillman, for the second season in a row while joining 12 of her fellow Panthers on the All-ACC Academic Team, the most in program history.

This is the second straight ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year award for Gray after winning it alongside Tillman last season as well. Pitt becomes the first school since the inception of the award, in 2007, to have a student-athlete win the honor three seasons in a row, with All-American Chinaza Ndee claiming the honor in 2020.

Gray will graduate in May with a graduate degree in Applied Developmental Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh School of Education. She holds a perfect, 4.000 GPA and was named 2nd Team Academic All-American earlier this month. She becomes the first Panther in program history to be awarded 1st Team All-American, Academic All-American and ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year in the same season.

A program-record 13 Panthers were awarded All-ACC Academic Team honors. Senior setter Lexis Akeo and fifth-year middle blocker Sabrina Starks have earned the recognition for the third time in their Pitt careers with senior DS/L Ashley Browske and Senior middle blocker Chiamaka Nwokolo each being named to the team for the second time. The other eight award winners have been named for the first time in their careers: Courtney Buzzerio, Julianna Dalton, Cam Ennis, Rachel Fairbanks, Cat Flood, Dillyn Griffin, Emmy Klika and Valeria Vazquez Gomez.

The sheer number of Panthers on the All-Academic team should come as no surprise this season, after the Panthers delivered a very impressive 3.72 team GPA in the fall, the highest team GPA in a semester in the Dan Fisher era.
