WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Two Boilermakers, Eva Hudson and Maddie Schermerhorn were chosen by the league office for the Big Ten volleyball weekly awards. Hudson was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second straight week while Schermerhorn earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
The honors come after the Boilermakers improved to 6-0 and won the Reamer Club Xtra Special tournament. Wins included a sweep vs. Bradley, a five-set thriller vs. #RV Utah and a 4-1 victory vs. Milwaukee.
Hudson led the league with 49 kills in Week 2 in addition to leading all Big Ten underclassmen with 4.83 points per match. Moreover, Hudson recorded 21 kills vs. Milwaukee to close out the tournament, a career-best and ties as the most by a Big Ten player in a four-set match this season. Furthermore, she did so at a .395 hitting clip. In the past seven years, only All-Americans Sherridan Atkinson, Grace Cleveland, Danielle Cuttino and Faye Adelaja have registered as efficient of a match while posting 20 or more kills. Of those four Boilermakers, Hudson is the only one to accomplish the feat as an underclassman.
Schermerhorn anchored the back row as libero, averaging 4.92 digs per set and a Big Ten-leading 59 digs over Week 2. In the victory vs. Utah, the senior posted 26 digs, not only a career-best, but tie as the most by a Big Ten player this season. Schermerhorn, a Ligonier, Indiana, product saw 45 receptions over the three matches, going perfect in the final two matches after allowing just one reception error vs. Bradley. It is the first weekly award honor of Schermerhorn’s career.
In total, Purdue has taken home four weekly awards in the first two weeks of the season.
Purdue will be back in action this weekend at #3 Louisville for the Louisville Invitational. The Boilermakers will take on the Cardinals on Friday, September 9 at 7 p.m. ET on ACCNx before playing Lipscomb or Xavier on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET on FloVolleyball.
