WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Wrapping up the final set of Big Ten weekly award honors, Purdue volleyball’s Eva Hudson will close the chapter the same way she began the season: earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.
With the award, Hudson ties Dana Rettke (Wisconsin, 2017) for most total awards earned by a Big Ten freshman with 10. While Hudson will enter the Big Ten record books with seven Freshman of the Week honors – the second-most ever received – the outside hitter set the record for most Player of the Week nods earned by a freshman (three).
Last week, Hudson led the Boilermakers to a 3-1 victory at Maryland and to a five setter at No. 11 Penn State, where she averaged 3.89 kills per set last week. Moreover, she ranked fifth in the league with 4.56 points per set.
Not only did Hudson produce back-to-back doubles to bring her season total to six (18 kills, 12 digs at Maryland and 17 kills, 14 digs at No. 11 Penn State), the Fort Wayne, Indiana native came three digs shy of matching her career-best in digs against the Nittany Lions.
In total, she produced 41 points, third-most among all Big Ten players.
With her 128 attempts over the last two matches, Hudson enters the Purdue single- top-10 list in total attempts, the first Boilermaker since All-American Sherridan Atkinson in 2018. She currently ranks No. 9 with 1,332 attempts. Moreover, she is the first freshman in program history to produce as many attempts.
Hudson and the Boilermaker squad enter the NCAA tournament as an eight-seed. They are set to take on Tennessee in the first round on Friday at 4 p.m. ET in Louisville. The match will be streamed live on espn+. The winner of the match will then face the winner of host No. 1 seed (fourth-overall) Louisville vs. Samford.
