Huskies Fall To No. 7 GCU, No. 11 Cal

STANFORD, Calif. – The Huskies had a hard final day of the regular season at Stanford today, losing one of their top players early in the first of two matches against highly ranked opponents. UW battled as best it could and played a number of tight sets, but ultimately lost a couple 5-0 matches to No. 7 Grand Canyon and No. 11 Cal.
 
In the first match against the Lopes, the Husky ones team of Natalie Robinson and Chloe Loreen had a 10-4 lead in the first set but then had to default as Loreen suffered an injury. At No. 4, Ashley Shook and Hannah Yerex had a 21-18 first set win but lost set two and then the third, 10-15. Audra Wilmes and Maeve Griffin nearly forced a third set at three but dropped a 21-12, 22-20 match to DeFalco/Morin.
 
In the second match, the Huskies had to shake up their lineup without Loreen. Paloma Bowman and Scarlett Dahl stayed together but moved to No. 1, and nearly grabbed a win, but lost a three-setter, 15-21, 21-15, 15-12, to Cal’s Gessner/Costa.
 
Robinson teamed with Wilmes for the first time at No. 2, and the two had a tight first set loss, 21-19, and then dropped a 21-14 second set to Dreibholz/McKeown. Emma Calle and Kyra Petersen were tight in both sets at No. 5 but fell, 21-18, 21-18.
 
The Dawgs have just two days off before the start of the Pac-12 Championships, which take them to Tucson, Ariz. next Wednesday through Friday.
