Honolulu, Hawaii – The No. 14 ranked Washington Huskies headed down to Hawaii for the Queens Cup Tournament. On day one of the three-day event the Huskies faced Oregon and No. 11 ranked California. The Huskies beat Oregon in a 4-1 match at Queen’s Beach and then proceeded to lose to Cal 1-4.
The Huskies continue to face tough top-20 opponents with two of their losses last weekend coming from No. 2 USC and No. 7 Stanford. Their loss to No. 11 Cal today brings their overall record to 5-5. Washington can still answer the call against a highly-ranked squad with No. 9 Hawaii on deck tomorrow.
Oregon
To start the day the Huskies faced off against Oregon, who they had swept just the match before in the Pac-12 South Invitational last weekend. The Ducks kept their lineup the same, while the Dawgs changed their No.4 pair from Sinclair/Bowman to Maeve Griffin and Mary Sinclair. All five pairs took to the courts at the same time.
The first team to finish up was the Huskies No. 1 pair Chloe Loreen and Natalie Robinson. The pair defeated Oregon’s Brown/Almanza 21-11, 21-10 to give the Huskies their first point.
The next point came from pair Hannah Yerex and Scarlett Dahl. The pair took down Peterson/McCaskill 21-15 in the first set, then made swift work of the second winning 21-5.
Next for the Huskies pair Shannon Gormally and Teagan DeFalco took down Rotshtein/Plevin to secure the win for Washington. The pair won 21-13, 21-17.
On court four, new pair Maeve Griffin and Mary Sinclair battled Oregon’s Schroeder/George. The pair fought hard, but the Ducks prevailed 21-18, 21-18.
Last to finish was pair No. 2 who worked themselves into a three-set tiebreak. Piper Monk-Heidrich and Kendall Mather dropped the first set to Tyus/Wetton 25-27 then followed up by responding 21-13. The Huskies triumphed in the tiebreak 15-11.
The Huskies defeated Oregon 4-1.
California
The Huskies faced a tough No. 11 ranked Cal team to finish day one of Queens Cup. Washington made some lineup changes after the first game, bringing in Paloma Bowman and Scarlett Dahl to the No. 4 Pair and Hannah Yerex and Mary Sinclair to the No. 5 pair.
