Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, July 11, 2022 – Japan played a solid match to win the 21st Asian Women’s U20 Volleyball Championship with a straight-sets win 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-22) against China on Monday evening at Nur-Sultan City’s NU Sports Centre.
Arina Tsutsumi (16 points), Anna Uemura (13 points) and Tsugumi Fukazawa (10 points) delivered stellar performances in double-digits for Japan’s seventh title, taking over from the Asian Women’s U19 records.
Japan opened their championship bid by sending off powerful serves, knowing how this could do impact the over-all pace and tone of the match. They were able to succeed with several several service winners, but for most part, they threw off their opponents’ passing rhythm.
Uemura soared to show some skilful back row attacks.
Tsutsumi played cool and composed as she scored from the left flank.
The Japan team played the floor tremendously well. Libero Amika Tokumoto covered well, and sought much support from entire passing unit.
China tried to line up their blocks, and showed that their tall players could deliver on deflections. They started to keep a tight guard on the wing and closed off their blocks well.
They ran their plays on their reliable hitters captain Wang Yifan and Zhuang Yushan.
Japan continued to orchestrate lightning-quick plays and resorted to combinations that saw their opponents often lag behind in defence. Captain and setter Haruka Kaji trusted and connected with her hitters from all zones, and engineered an effective game plan.
The Chinese side played catch-up, as Zhuang Xinru likewise delivered with power plays. They also activated Zeng Jieya for the middle attack.
Soon enough, Japan were doing everything precisely well and they forced unlikely errors from their opponents. They took good cue from their momentum, all the way to the championship point from Uemura’s wing attack.
