Urmia, Iran, August 19, 2023 – Japan captured a scintillating 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-22) victory against Thailand in the 2023 Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship at Al-Ghadir Hall on Saturday.
Yuji Nishida tallied 12 attacks, and 2 blocks to lead a bevy of strong Japanese hitters to their first victory in the eight-day championship. Teammate Yuki Ishikawa also made double-digit efforts with 13 points. Napadet Bhinijdee led Thailand with 14 markers, 13 built from attacks.
Japanese fired on all cylinders as they kept the Thai defense struggling early on in the match. They excelled in their attacks to post a leading pace and a 25-19 win in the opening set.
In the second set, Thailand played better in transition plays, had the better game, but it was Japan that counter-attacked well and managed to surge ahead Thailand to take the set 25-21.
Japan dominated the third set from the very beginning with Nishida leading the charge in attack and matched down the final stretch for the third-set win 25-22 to bag their first win in the championship.
