Jata Earns Empire 8 & UVC Rookie of the Week Honors

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Empire 8 Athletic Conference, along with the United Volleyball Conference, announced their weekly award winners on Monday afternoon as Elmira College men’s volleyball outside hitter Luke Jata ’27 earned Rookie of the Week honors from both the Empire 8 and UVC.

A first-year member of the Soaring Eagles, Jata played in 12 sets over the weekend for the Purple & Gold, who went 2-2 at the Misericordia Invitational. Jata totaled 23 kills, eight digs, four blocks, and two service aces while accounting for 27.5 points through four matches.

Jata finished with a team-high eight kills for the Soaring Eagles on Friday against Rutgers-Newark to go along with a pair of service aces. He helped the Soaring Eagles record a pair of victories on Saturday, as he notched five kills against New Jersey City while tallying eight kills in a five-set thriller against Drew.

This is the second Empire 8 Rookie of the Week honor this season for Jata, while the recognition from the UVC is the first of his freshmen campaign. This is the second consecutive Empire 8 and UVC Rookie of the Week sweep for the Soaring Eagles after Dylan Vargas ’27 garnered both honors last week.

The Soaring Eagles return to action on February 8th with a non-conference matchup inside Speidel Gymnasium against Hilbert College beginning at 7:00 P.M.
