Jehlárová selected No. 2 overall, Basham goes in fifth round of inaugural Pro Volleyball Federation college draft

ATLANTA — Washington State volleyball fifth-year senior Magda Jehlářová was selected No. 2 overall by the San Diego Mojo in the inaugural Pro Volleyball Federation collegiate player draft as announced by the league following its inaugural college player draft Monday.  Her back row teammate, fifth-year senior libero Karly Basham, was later selected with the No. 32 overall pick — the fourth pick of the fifth round — by the Grand Rapids Rise.

After being selected with the second pick, Jehlářová was later traded by San Diego to the Atlanta Vibe in exchange for former Illinois middle blocker Ali Bastianelli, and former Arizona outside hitter, Kendra Dahlke.

“We are very excited for Magda and Karly! What a great opportunity to get drafted and be able to stay in the U.S. to play professionally,” said Washington State Head Volleyball Coach Jen Greeny. “We are thrilled that Coug fans across the country will get to continue watching both Magda and Karly play at the highest level.”

Jehlářová’s selection comes on the heels of a historic five-year career in which she was the only athlete in Pac-12 history to earn five consecutive first-team all-conference honors.  During her final year on the Palouse, she became the NCAA leader in career blocks (769), while also setting a Washington State single-season record for hitting percentage (.424).  She leaves Washington State as the program’s career leader in matches played (147), hitting percentage (.384), and block assists (624).  Her greatness was exemplified during the Cougars’ postseason run as she averaged 2.90 kills/set while hitting at a .522 clip in WSU’s Sweet 16 run.  She put up a remarkable 10 blocks to go along with 15 kills and zero errors in the Cougars’ second-round win over Dayton in Bohler Gym.

The Cougars’ libero from their past three NCAA Tournament runs, Louisville, Ky., native, Basham, finished the season with 3.31 digs/set and another 26 aces, finishing her collegiate career with 113 aces and ,1424 career digs.  Basham tied a WSU program record with seven aces in a home win over Belmont during her senior season in 2022, and was an integral part of the Cougars’ 2023 Sweet 16…
